In case you were wondering . . .
Here are some answers to a few of your most frequently asked questions:
Q. How often can I tan?
Tanning frequency and maximum exposure times are regulated on a federal and state level.
Ohio state law requires 24 hours between tanning visits, regardless of exposure time. (Some states require as much as 48 hours between visits.)
The Exposure Schedules that you see posted on every tanning unit are required by federal and state laws and are designed to give the skin time to process the UV light without allowing overexposure and risk of sunburn. Our trained operators will determine your best exposure time based on a number of factors including skin type, medical data, recent exposure and lamp condition. However, the maximum exposure time on each tanning unit may never be exceeded.
Q. Is it really that important to wear protective eyewear?
YES!
Prolonged exposure to UV light can be irreparably damaging to your eyes - and your eyelids do not provide the necessary protection to block ultraviolet rays. And neither are cotton balls, coins, towels, etc.
If you do not use the proper eye protection, you are running the risk of developing mascular degeneration, cataracts, permanent eye growths (like pinguecula or pterygium), loss of color perception or poor night vision.
Q. How can I prevent "raccoon eyes"?
Adjust your protective eyewear during your tanning session. Don't lift the eyewear, just slide it gently while making sure your entire eye is covered. In extreme cases, minimizing the effects with makeup or a self-tanner is an option.
Q. Can I tan while I'm pregnant?
UV LIGHT WILL NOT REACH YOUR UNBORN BABY, as it does not travel beyond the top layers of the skin.
HOWEVER, there are a number of other concerns that may cause a potential risk to the pregnant woman: the increased potential of becoming overheated, hormones that may cause uneven tanning and constricted blood vessels while lying on your back.
If you want to tan while pregnant, we strongly recommend discussing this with your physician first.
Q. What are the causes of white spots?
White spots are divided into 3 main types:
Pressure Points are seen on skin surfaces that contact the equipment, such as shoulder blades, upper arms and the back of calves. To help avoid this, shift position during your tanning sessions so that all skin receives oxygen.
Tinea Versicolor, or "sunspots", is a dandruff-like fungus that flakes off the scalp onto the upper body. This is very common and has nothing to do with cleanliness of the bed, skin or scalp. This can be easily treated with an over-the-counter topical treatment (many of which are available at your local tanning salon) or by the use of an extra-strength dandruff control shampoo while showering.
Vitiligo is irregularly-shaped white patches of skin that do not tan. It is caused by a condition that causes melanocyte cells in the affected area to degenerate and die off. This condition requires treatment by a licensed physician.
Q. Will taking medications affect my tanning?
YES! Many medications, and even some foods, have an adverse affect on indoor or outdoor tanning. Some may cause extreme sensitivity to any UV exposure, while others may seem to block UV tanning rays altogether.
If you are taking any medications, or if you experience any trouble during your tanning process, please consult the Photo-Sensitive Medications list posted in our salon or consult one of our certified tanning specialists.
Q. Is it really that important to use lotion while tanning?
YES! The heat and light from tanning sessions (whether indoor or outdoor) can dry your skin.
It's a proven fact - moist skin tans best. In fact, dry skin actually reflects the UV tanning rays. So, if your skin is dry during the tanning session, you could potentially only receive about 50% of what you should get from the session.
Moisturize daily, as well as before and after each tanning session.
Use a good tanning lotion during your tanning session - any of our state-certified tanning specialists can help you pick out a good lotion to try.
